The International Academy for Design & Health is a leading global, interdisciplinary knowledge community dedicated to the stimulation and application of research concerning the interaction between design, health, science & culture.

Providing a highly visible global forum for an ongoing exchange of research findings among scientists, designers and industry, we work in close partnership with our international network of governments, universities and commercial organizations to promote human health, wellbeing and quality of life through environmental design.

The centerpiece of our activities is the 11th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition, which will be held in Hong Kong, China, 15-19 July 2015.

Organised by the International Academy for Design & Health. With the support of Architectural Services Department, Housing Department and Department of Health of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Hospital Authority. Supported by leading academic institutions and healthcare industries worldwide, with participation of ministries of health from South Africa and Vietnam. Our 11th World Congress comes to Hong Kong with a cutting-edge scientific programme that will help to underpin a salutogenic healthy society for the 21st century.

The International Academy for Design & Health (IADH) and its Australasian partners have successfully launched a new and exciting publication at the 9th Design & Health World Congress in Brisbane, from 10-14 July.

Edited by Kate Copeland, past president of the Australasian College of Health Service Management, Australian Healthcare Design 2000-2015 reviews past, current and future projects and trends in healthcare design in Australia and New Zealand, providing a unique reference publication for researchers and practitioners in the global field of design & health.

The hardcase publication, which has been produced in collaboration with Government State Health Departments and the Australasian partners of the 9th Design & Health World Congress, which was held in Brisbane, from 10-14 July, 2013, consists of a collection of essays from prominent Australasian academics and practitioners, as well as a comprehensive catalogue of projects delivered during a remarkable period of capital investment in health infrastructure. Design & Health China 2014 attracts global speakers in Beijing

The Design & Health China 2014 International Symposium organised by the International Academy for Design & Health and Spire Coris in partnership with Beijing University of Civil Engineering & Architecture, was successfully held at the Marco Polo Parkside Hotel in Beijing, from 30 October - 1 November.


Dedicated to exploring global salutogenic perspectives on the creation of a healthy society in China, the event explored how the quality of the built environment affects our health, wellbeing and quality of life, bringing together interdisciplinary world experts to share their knowledge in the creation of a new salutogenic vision for a healthy China in 2020.

St Olavs Hospital, Norway scoops seven Academy Awards

The recently completed St Olavs Hospital in Trondheim, Norway received a total of seven awards at this year's prestigious Design & Health International Academy Awards 2014, announced in a prestigious ceremony on the 12 July at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada.

Considered by the judges to be at the leading edge of innovation in terms of both its adoption of digital technology, its approach to health promotion and the way the hospital design had been integrated with the city, St Olavs was judged to be the overall winner of three categories, including International Health Project (over 40,000 sqm); International Salutogenic Design; and Product Design for Healthcare Application for an interactive digital installation that assist patients and families to educate themselves about their health. The hospital was also highly commended in the category, Use of Art in the Patient Environment; whilst its specialist Knowledge Centre building received high commendations in Sustainable Design; Interior Design and International Health Project (under 40,000 sqm).

Other strong performers included St Mary's Hospital in British Columbia, Canada, designed by Farrow Partnership Architects and Perkins + Will, which won the Sustainable Design and Use of Art in the Patient Environment categories, and the Deheng Clinic in Beijing, designed by Robarts Interiors and Architecture, which was highly commended in the Interior Design and International Salutogenic Design categories.

The awards programme comprised ten categories across the key areas of international health delivery, including the prestigious Lifetime Leadership Award, which was won by Prof George Mann AIA of Texas A&M University.

Prof George Mann receives Academy's Lifetime Leadership Award

Lifetime Leader: Prof George Mann
The International Academy for Design & Health has awarded Prof George J Mann, RA, AIA, FAIA, its prestigious Lifetime Leadership Award.

Awarded by the Academy every year to a healthcare leader and visionary who has shown an ongoing, lifelong commitment to enhancing the health, wellbeing and quality of people’s lives through their dedication to healthcare design, the award recognises the human and personal qualities needed to push back the boundaries of progress and inspire future generations.

The award was announced during the Gala Academy Awards Dinner at the 10th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in Toronto, held from 9-13th July, and presented by the Academy’s founder and CEO, Dr Alan Dilani together with former Lifetime Leadership Award winners, Eb Zeidler and Prof Ian Forbes.

Prof Mann, who is professor of architecture and The Ronald L Skaggs, FAIA endowed professor of health facilities design at Texas A&M University is recognized worldwide as a leader in health facilities design. He has over 48 years of pioneering experience in the field of architecture for health through his architectural research, teaching, consulting, and practice. Professor Mann has also published numerous articles, and research reports, giving presentations of his findings on both a natural and international level.
